This user guide is designed for customers who are currently using Lackner 6-in-1 Network Version v6 on one server and wish to install Lackner 6-in-1 Network Version v10 on a different server. For standalone, non-network, single-user usage, please refer to our Standalone version of this guide (6in1_v10_InstallGuide_Standalone) For new Installations of v10 Server without requiring an upgrade from v6, refer to our New Installation version of this guide. Customers upgrading their network versions of Lackner 6-in1 v6 to Lackner 6-in-1 v10 on the same server should refer to the Same-Server version of this guide (6in1_v10_InstallGuide_Server_1PC) |
The migration from v6 to v10 is straightforward, and we have designed the process so that you can feel comfortable doing the installation yourself. This install guide is designed to walk you through the steps
To install the 6-in-1 v10 version for 2010 you will need to perform the following sequence of steps:
Note that you will need at least 5 gigabytes of available hard drive space to install the 6-in-1 v10 program components for the new server. The Installer will provide a way to install just the bits you need for the Step 1 of the data conversion on your older server.
The majority of these steps are quite simple to do and do not take much time. Just follow the instructions below and refer to the screenshots where appropriate. The Step 1 and Step 2 tasks can take considerably longer, especially if you have large datafiles. If you have a large number of transactions in your v6 files, you can assume that the migration will take about 30 minutes plus an additional 30 minutes for every 10,000 transactions.
This document outlines a straightforward and specific sequence of steps that you must follow. By following these instructions, you will increase the likelihood of a smooth upgrade and decrease your need for additional support. We have worked hard to make this process go as smoothly as possible.
| Important Note: Once you have completed the migration process, you should add or edit data only in v10. |
If you have questions or difficulties with the installation, please call us at 412/279-2121 and we will return your call as quickly as possible to schedule a time for us to help walk you through the process.
| Download the latest Lackner 6-in-1 database installer. The version numbers will read something like 2010-nnn-Svr.exe install package, where nnn is something like 052 (a Julian date). Here is an example of what the download file might look like: |
First, be sure all your users have logged off of the Lackner 6-in-1 System.
If you are not sure, open a command line session and type: netstat -an : find “:5003” This will locate all open TCP sessions using port 5003, which is the main data port used by FileMaker Server. The resulting list should only reveal one or two sessions from the IP of the filemaker server itself; no other workstation IPs should be visible in that list. Then, on your current Lackner 6-in-1 v6 Server, go to the Start Menu, select All Programs, and then select the FileMaker Server Console |
Note: If you have User Account Controls enabled, there are many actions during the installation process, such as this one, which will cause the operating system to request your permission. When you see this type of message, press Allow to continue with the processing.
For the sake of saving space, the documentation will not repeat this information at every possible juncture, or may simply state “Allow this step if UAC is enabled”. |
| If your server is running on a 64-bit machine, then you MUST select the 32-bit option in the bottom of the Microsoft Management Console window. |
| Under the FileMaker Server Console for Windows, on the left panel, double click on the Services(Local) option to reveal a list of running services. Then double click on the FileMaker Server item in the list on the right |
This will open the FileMaker Server Properties (Local Computer) dialog
Press the Stop button. |
Windows will attempt to stop the services. After a few moments, the Server Status will read Stopped.
Press the OK button. Then close the FileMaker Server Console for Windows window. |
| It is very important to prevent the v6 server from hosting data once you migrate to the Lackner 6-in-1 v10 server, so you need change the Startup Type to Disabled so that this instance of the old server will not automatically start up again |
| Press the Apply button. The FileMaker 5.5 Service is now stopped and the Startup Type is Disabled. Press the OK button to close the window. |
Confirm your changes in the Services (local) list, which will show the FileMaker Service Startup Type as Disabled, and the status column will be empty, indicating the service is not running.
You may now close the FileMaker Server Console Window |
| The Lackner 6-in-1 database installer contains components that are used for the Step #1 and Step #2 parts of the data conversion. In a one-server install, both Steps will occur on the same server. In a two-server install, Step #1 will be performed on your v6 Server, and the Step #2 portion will be performed on the new v10 server. To install, double click on the Lackner 6-in-1 database installer you downloaded above and enter you Lackner password to access the installer. |
Make sure that FileMaker Server service is stopped, and any instances of FileMaker Pro 6 and FileMaker Pro 10 are closed.
Press the Next button |
This dialog appears to confirm that you want to display the Step #1 components on the Lackner 6-in-1 v6 server. The Step #2 components will be installed later on your new Lackner 6-in-1 v10 server.
Select Yes and then press the Next button |
| Note: the software installer will add to your existing v6 installation several utility files that are used during the conversion process. None of your existing data will be removed, deleted or changed during this process. Once you have completed the migration process from v6 to V10, you should NOT add or edit data in v6.
This installation task simply decompresses the appropriate files and puts them in the right place on your hard drive. It does not convert files or copy data yet; that will occur in following steps. |
The installer needs to know where your existing Estates6 data is located. If the default is not correct, use the browse button to select. If you select an invalid path, an error will display. If the path is correct and data is found, then a confirmation dialog will appear
(This path is read from the Windows Registry and thus represents the last active path used to open Lackner v6 6-in-1 so it should be valid) Press Next |
| The confirmation dialog |
| Files will install |
| When files have been extracted and copied, a confirmation dialog will display. |
At this point, the installer will attempt to launch your copy of Lackner 6-in-1 to begin the Step #1 process.
When Step #1 is complete, there will be a folder called Converter06 containing the data that will need to be moved to your new Server for the Step #2 process. Read the dialog and then Press Next to continue. |
If the installer did not automatically open your files, open up your 6-in-1 v6 files in the usual way.
Note that there is now a new button on the right side of the layout labeled Convert from v6 (Step #1)... Press the Convert from v6 (Step #1).. button. |
You will now see the 6-in-1 Conversion layout with a button labeled Step #1: Prepare Version 6 data for conversion. Press that button.
The conversion routine will now process all the files one by one. Note that the Transact file may take several minutes if you have a large number of transactions. When this initial preparation process is done, you will be prompted to print a page summarizing the number of records in your v6 setup. Print that page. Now Press the 6-in-1 Menu button to navigate back to the 6-in-1 Menu layout. |
| If you do not have a printer configured for this server, then note that you will have a new icon in your task bar to Save the file as. Press that icon to pull up a print window..... |
| .....and press the cancel button. |
Note that there is now a message on the right of your menu layout indicating that you have already completed step 1 of the conversion, and that you should no longer be adding or editing data in the v6 version.
Press the Quit button in the usual way. If you haven't made any changes to your files, you do not need to perform another backup at this time. |
| Technical Note
The 6-in-1 system is based on the FileMaker Pro family of database products. The v6 version of 6-in-1 is based on FileMaker Pro 6, and the v10 version of 6-in-1 is based on FileMaker Pro 10. The v10 product incorporates new layouts to handle the 2009 forms and a variety of modifications to make the behavior consistent with the v6 product. In the abstract, there are two steps to the conversion:
We have added an additional processing step that ends up saving time during conversion process:
So the first step of the conversion to prepare the data is the step where the simple files get populated with your real data. Then in the next step there will first be a sequence of data conversion routines. They will display messages on screen showing the conversion process. This will be followed by a data import step for each of the files. |
On your Lackner 6-in-1 v10 server you will need to ensure that you do not have any instances of older versions of FileMaker Server installed before you attempt to install the Lackner 6-in-1 v10 server components. If you do not have FileMaker Server 5.5 installed, you may skip the next few steps.
A common path for many server install is ~/Program Files/FileMaker/FileMaker Server 5.5 If you do need to uninstall FileMaker Server 5.5, you need to first make sure that you have properly patched your instance of FileMaker Server 5.5. This patch fixes an issue where under some circumstances FileMaker Server 5.5 will not cleanly uninstall. The release is available here: http://www.lacknergroup/com/msi/v6/FMS55update.exe Make sure all users are logged off. Close the databases and stop the FileMaker Server service. Select Start Menu / Control Panel Select Add/Remove Programs or Uninstall a Program press the Uninstall button |
Steps to take if your computer says the feature is unavailable:
If the uninstaller cannot be found, you will see an error message that looks like the screen shot on the right. To allow the uninstallation to proceed, you will need to obtain a copy of the FileMaker Server 5.5 msi installer file. Visit http://www.lacknergroup.com/msi/v6 to locate the MSI file. Download the FMS55msi.zip file to your desktop. Unzip the FMS55msi.zip file to extract the installer. Note: you do not need to run the extracted file! This will start up the installer and begin prompting you to install FileMaker Server 5.5. You do not want to do this; after all, we are going through this to uninstall FileMaker 5.5! Should the installer begin for some reason, simply cancel out of it. Then return to this dialog, press the Browse button and locate your newly extracted FileMaker Server 5.5 installer. As always, Accept the UAC dialog if prompted. |
Press Yes at the prompt.
This will NOT uninstall your data. A series of Preparing to remove... messages will appear. Be patient while the FileMaker Server 5.5 components are removed. |
| If you neglected to install the FMS55update.exe patch described above, you may see this FileMaker Server 5.5 Error 1723 error message. This error means that a necessary patch for Server 5.5 has not been installed. If you see this message then you must install the patch. |
